Power Supply Functions Required by the i.MX 8M Nano Application Processor Realized on a Single Chip

The BD71850MWV incorporates power supply circuits that were designed in keeping with the power supply system of i.MX 8M Nano application processors, integrating 6 buck DC/DC converters and 6 LDO linear regulators, and is also capable of single-chip power supply to the DDR memory required by applications. In addition, the device also incorporates a 1.8 V/3.3 V switch for an SDXC card interface, a 32.768 kHz crystal oscillator driver, protection functions for each power supply system (such as output short-circuits, output over-voltages, output over-currents, thermal shutdown), and control logic (see the block diagram).

The buck DC/DC converters have a maximum efficiency of 95%, and the PMIC operates over a wide input voltage range (from 2.7 V to 5.5 V) supporting a variety of power sources from a single Li-ion battery cell to USB, and so is ideal for applications in which the i.MX 8M Nano processor tends to be used.

High level of Integration in a Compact Package Dramatically Reduces the Number of Components and Footprint

The power supply circuits and functions shown in the block diagram above are packed into a compact 7 mm × 7 mm × 1 mm 56-pin QFN package. The pin configuration is designed to facilitate connection to the i.MX 8M Nano application processor and to DDR memory, alleviating much of the trouble of PCB layout.

Compared with a system that uses discrete components to provide equivalent functions, it is possible to eliminate 42 components and reduce footprint by 42% (assuming single-sided mounting on a type 3 PCB). If double-sided mounting is used, power supply functions can be provided using not more than 400 mm2 of footprint.

In the interest of more flexible application design, a sequencer is equipped that supports several power modes (RUN, IDLE, SUSPEND, SNVS, OFF). Via an I2C interface and an OTP (One Time Programmable) ROM, the several power supplies can be turned on/off and their output voltages controlled, and protection functions can be enabled or disabled, according to the functions and memory type required by the system. Moreover, power mode transition conditions are customizable, so that application design optimized to the conditions of use is possible.
