Applications Using IGBTs

In the previous article, application ranges were explained with respect to the output capacities and operating frequencies of IGBTs and other power devices. Here, the relations between ranges of application and specific application areas are described.
Applications Using IGBTs
The diagram below shows the applicable scopes of IGBT discretes and modules and Si MOSFET discretes in terms of output capacities and operating frequencies, as well as examples of applications that fall within the scopes. The scopes are the same as those shown in the previous article, with applications mapped to them.
There are some application areas that overlap, but when it comes to trains and HEV/EVs, which handle high voltages and large currents, in most cases IGBT modules are used. IGBT and Si MOSFET discreates are frequently used in such application areas as home appliances and compact industrial equipment; in general, they are used selectively in consideration of the advantages afforded by their operating frequencies.
