Applicable Scope of IGBT IPMs and Applications

Among popular applications of IGB IPMs is a 3-phase inverter that combines six IGBs and a 3-phase gate driver. IPMs began to be used in household appliances such as air conditioners; today, a variety of IPMs exist, rated from several tens of Watts to the several-kW class, for use in fan motors, compressor motors, and the like. Applications for IGBT IPMs run the gamut from household products to small industrial motors.

The image below indicates the applicable scopes of IGBTs and other power devices in terms of output capacity and operating frequency, as well as examples of applications that fall within the scopes. This graphic also appeared in “Applications Using IGBTs” in the article “About IGBTs“. In general, in areas where IGBT IPMs are mainly used, IGBT modules with relatively low outputs of several kVA or less are used.

As indicated in the figure, there are some application areas in which there is competition among IGBT modules, IGBT discretes and Si MOSFETs. A decision as to which power device to select should be based on the explanations in “Advantages of IGBT IPMs“, as well as an examination of the advantages of discrete solutions in order to choose the most effective device.
