IGBT IPM: Protection Functions and Operation Sequences

2024.02.08

Points of this article

・The protection functions and operation sequences of IGBT IPMs are explained, using as examples the BM6437xseries.

・In addition to understanding protection functions, the operation sequences, method of calculating the values of external components, and other matters must be understood.

IGBT IPM protection functions and operation sequences are here explained, taking as examples the BM6437x series, which are ROHM’s third generation of IGBT IPMs. In the design stage, along with an understanding of protection functions, the operation sequences, method of calculating the values of components that are necessary such as resistors and capacitors, and other matters must be understood. Here, the following subjects are explained.

  • Short circuit current protection(SCP)
  • Control power supply undervoltage lockout(UVLO)
  • Thermal shutdown(TSD)
  • Analog temperature output(VOT)
  • Fault output (FO)
  • Control inputs (HINU, HINV, HINW, LINU, LINV, LINW)

Reading the data sheets for the IGBT IPMs used as examples will also facilitate understanding. The following are links to the data sheets for the relevant products.

Series Part Number Rating
