A motor driver IC cannot do anything by itself; it can only rotate a motor when the IC is mounted on a motor driver circuit, receives power from a power supply, and connects to the winding coil of a motor. The motor driver circuit’s task is to efficiently convert electric power into rotational force and to extract the full potential of the motor mechanism. (It should be kept in mind that it is difficult to extract performance beyond the characteristics of the motor mechanism.)

In turn, these characteristics are reflected as energy-saving and quietness of the equipment after the motor is integrated into the equipment. In other words, the driving capability of the motor driver circuit affects the performance of the equipment. In addition, motor drivers must take into account both electrical reliability and mechanical reliability of the motor.

There exists the idea that “you can’t control without knowing what you are controlling.” Therefore, in order to make a motor driver, it is necessary to know the motor mechanism, the principle of rotation, and the usage on motor-mounted equipment.
