Surface Temperature Measurements: Thermocouple Mounting Position

Points of this article

・The thermocouple mounting position is also important for accurate measurement of TT.

・Even millimeter-unit shifts can result in temperature differences.

The position at which a thermocouple is mounted is also important for accurate TT measurement.

Thermocouple Mounting Position

Because TT is defined as the temperature at the center of the upper surface of a package, the center of the upper surface of the package must be identified as the position for mounting the thermocouple, and the tip (junction) of the thermocouple must be mounted precisely at that position. If the actual mounted position differs, TT will be different. The diagram below shows the results of simulations of the temperature distribution over the surface of a package. The thermal conductivity of package sealing resins ranges from approximately 0.3 to 1 W/mk, so that even millimeter-level shifts can result in temperature differences. The table shows the temperatures at points A to E in the diagram.

Thermal design has become a new issue in the design of electronic equipment in recent years, as thermal countermeasures have been the focus of attention. Although heat has been an important consideration for some time, the requirements for electronic equipment have changed in recent years, making it necessary to review conventional thermal countermeasures. This handbook describes thermal design based on the assumption that ICs and transistors are basically used in electronic equipment.
