Thermal Design of Semiconductor Components in Electronic EquipmentNumber of PCB Layers and Thermal Resistance

Points of this article

・The greater the number of layers in a multilayer PCB, the lower the thermal resistance will be.

・The effect of vias in reducing thermal resistance is considerable; rather than increasing the number of layers in a PCB, it is more effective to add vias.

The following graph presents data from simulations of the relationship between the number of PCB layers and thermal resistance. Simulations were also run for cases in which, as mounting conditions, vias were and were not provided.

Where the relation between number of layers and thermal resistance is concerned, clearly more PCB layers means lower thermal resistance. And from comparison of cases in which vias are and are not present, we see that vias have a powerful effect: thermal resistance can be reduced more effectively by providing vias than by increasing the number of PCB layers.

Thermal design has become a new issue in the design of electronic equipment in recent years, as thermal countermeasures have been the focus of attention. Although heat has been an important consideration for some time, the requirements for electronic equipment have changed in recent years, making it necessary to review conventional thermal countermeasures. This handbook describes thermal design based on the assumption that ICs and transistors are basically used in electronic equipment.
