Surface Temperature Measurements: Treatment of Thermocouple Tips

Points of this article

・The tip of a thermocouple must not be twisted.

・In order to minimize heat dissipation from the thermocouple, the junction is welded.

Treatment of Thermocouple Tips

In a thermocouple, two different kinds of metal wire are brought into contact to act as a temperature sensor. Occasionally one may see a thermocouple being used with the wires twisted together in contact. Such a thermocouple can be used for temperature measurement, but for correct temperature measurements, as a rule, the tip should be welded.

As stated in an earlier article, for accurate measurements of temperature, heat dissipation from the thermocouple must be held to a minimum. If the thermocouple tip is twisted, heat is dissipated from the excess portion, and the actual temperature drops. To minimize heat dissipation, the junction must be made as small as possible; and for this purpose, welding is optimal.

Thermal design has become a new issue in the design of electronic equipment in recent years, as thermal countermeasures have been the focus of attention. Although heat has been an important consideration for some time, the requirements for electronic equipment have changed in recent years, making it necessary to review conventional thermal countermeasures. This handbook describes thermal design based on the assumption that ICs and transistors are basically used in electronic equipment.
